What to Bring

Although Shetland has a surprisingly mild climate considering that we're on the same latitude as Southern Greenland or St. Petersburg, the weather can change very quickly and with little warning. It is better to be prepared for any eventuality. Pack whatever you'd take on a camping holiday except of course the tent!

The following items are essential:
Sleeping bag
Ordnance Survey maps
Warm/waterproof clothing and footwear

If you choose to stay in one of the Böds with no electricity (Nesbister, Johnny Notions or Grieve House) you will also need to bring a camping stove, cooking utensils and crockery.

For many people the long summer days are the most remarkable aspect or Shetland's climate. May is often the sunniest month and in June the sun can shine for 19 hours. There is virtually no darkness, just a twilight we call the Simmer Dim. Very dense sea mists can arise quickly during the summer months. Hillwalkers MUST have a compass, a decent map and be able to use them. Proper clothing and footwear are also an essential.
